I get where you are coming from, but I feel like there is more to it than that. In short, the blades are boring as hell and their undeserved importance placed on them in every game in the series annoys me to no end. The main quest would have functioned just as well if it focused on the graybeards instead and found an alternative way to set the stage for the Thalmor. They really were only there to provide background information and perspective on the evilness of the Thalmor and it wasn’t even completely necessary for them to be the ones to provide that context. Skyrim: Once again, integral to the story for no reason. I mean, at least Baurus was cool and you could decline to accept Jauffre’s offer to join them, but still you could tell that you weren’t “supposed to” decline the offer. Oblivion: We’re gonna introduce the hero of Kvatch to the blades so they become familiar with and reliant on them for a sense of direction in the main quest. Morrowind: Wanna do the main quest at all? Welcome to the blades. And yet they’re an integral part of every main game because they’re forced in. They’re an intelligence agency as well, but they just about never feel important or even competent in any of the main games. Generic knightly order minus a potentially interesting chivalric code and in its place, emperor worship and Dragonborn worship. They’re not even remotely interesting as a faction.
